  by Steve Wright

This book is an essential guide for all those with an interest in pointing dogs. It is aimed at the complete novice but also those with more experience. The author's enthusiasm is infectious, and makes this step-by-step guide a clear and accessible read.

Steve Wright comes from a dog breeding family, and has been training, working and breeding dogs for over 60 years - 35 of them with hunt/point/retrievers (HPRs).

Much of this time he has been involved in teaching professional dog trainers, from across the UK and globally. In retirement he instructs and runs training days for the Brittany Club of Great Britain, as well as Worcester Gundog Club's HPR section.

Individual chapters take you through each aspect of choosing, owning, training, working and eventually breeding pointing dogs - with each element of the HPR's 'portfolio of skills' being covered separately.  A 'fault solving chart' makes a useful addition at the end of the relevant chapters.

The text is plentifully illustrated with over 80 full-colour photographs as well as diagrams.

What you say:

"Well written and informative. Breeders should be putting this book in the 'puppy pack'. The new owners wouldn't need to keep asking Facebook advice, then referring back with "I have a 9 month old pup" - Lee Loveridge, HPR trialler and A-list Judge.

"This book shows that most dog training and care is common sense, and the ability to read a dog and to understand the dog's world is not that complicated. The writer avoids jargon, and leads the reader through obtaining a puppy to eventually owning an obedient and affectionate dog" - Neil Ewart, former Breeding Manager, Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

"I wish I had this super book before I bought Dexter" - Clare Richardson, first-time HPR owner.

"Having been a professional working dog trainer for many years ........ it was a breath of fresh air to read Steve's accurate understanding of canine psychology, indicating many times that the reader would be dealing with a canine pack member .... " I particularly enjoyed the trouble-shooting tables at the end of specific sections....... it more than justifies and warrants its place on any enthusiast's bookshelf." - Simon Tyers - reviewing for the Falconer magazine.

"It has made very good reading - my mother-in-law has asked to borrow it!"  Grace Eliet, waiting for her second Brittany.

"Your new book looks really informative" - Fiona Cook, 3 years into her second Brittany

"It's a great reference manual. I use mine all the time" - Laura Winder, now successfully working her first Brittany and already a winner of a very competitive Novice Working Test.

Falconry: The Essential Guide

This book is designed for all those with an interest in falconry. A one-stop guide, it is aimed at both the novice falconer and those with more experience. The author's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious, and the text is written in a clear, accessible style.

The author has flown and hunted birds of prey for over 30 years and uses his knowledge to consider what is involved in becoming a falconer, and the factors that have to be taken into account when choosing and purchasing a bird. Individual chapters examine: preparing for the arrival of the bird; day-to-day management, including feeding, hygiene, health & welfare; early training; hunting and field craft; the quarry; and the falconer's use of dogs and ferrets.

Lavishly illustrated with over 100 full-colour photographs as well as diagrams, the book also includes a Glossary of Terms. Continuously in print since 2006.

Hawk Whispering Published in the IBR Directory No 6. For back copies or downloaded copies of the article contact ibr.org.uk.

This article is described as "one of the most innovative and refreshing new approaches to hawk training". It deals with the "language of birds of prey" and describes how an understanding of this will speed up the training and manning of raptors. By using the correct body language the falconer can communicate more readily with his or her hawk.

Ferret Whispering  Published in the IBR Directory No. 7. For back copies or downloaded copies of this article contact ibr.org.uk.

Written to help those falconers who get a ferret to work with their hawk - but have no experience of training or handling them. Sadly the published version, which finishes with a humorous and true anecdote, omitted the punch line. Read the story and then add "You silly bugger, it's still in there."

The following papers/articles can be obtained by emailing Steve at stevewright.falconer@virgin.net.

Training the Pointing dog This is an extracted chapter from my book on HPRs in general (see above) and the Brittany in particular.

Notes on recall training Written to help new Brittany owners and anyone else having problems with the recall. Steve Wright developed this new approach as a result of owning a non-responsive dog in his youth. He vowed never to have another one that did not come back reliably on command - and never has, despite running hard-headed, hunting dogs.

Colour inheritance in Brittanys  Written in 2014 when there was an upsurge of concern over the increasing number of Brittanys exhibiting this unrecognised colour. This short paper rationalises the breeding of sable.

Working a Brittany with birds of prey  Written for novice falconers who are considering getting a dog to work with their hawk or falcon.

Choosing a Brittany puppy  This is an extract from my book on HPRs in general (see above) and the Brittany in particular. Many would-be purchasers have been sent this to save writing to them individually. It has also been 'lent' to other breeders.
